Why Peter Pizzeria is worthy of your dough.

With a styling of shabby chic meets Marvel superheroes, you instantly know this ain’t your ordinary Pizzeria - and there’s nothing shabby about the pizza PETER is serving up.

Peter Pizzeria say pizza has an injured name in the UK and we’d tend to agree with them. How many places these days offer pizza on a two for one deal like they can’t get rid of them? PETER are out to revive the pizzeria, so The Version went down to their new restaurant in Leicester (they also have a restaurant in Loughborough and one on the way in Nottingham by the way) to see if this is the best pizza you will find outside of Italy.

The Italians are well known for their design, and the first thing that strikes us is the quirky yet homely feel that PETER have brought to the grand setting of a renovated grade-ii listed Victorian building. Inside the influence of film culture is apparent, from the use of cinema-style seating at some of the tables, to the movie posters adorning the walls, (and even a movie being projected onto another wall). Upstairs there is a games room with ping pong and table football, and a separate function room that can seat 30 around one ginormous dinner table.  All this provides a relaxed environment that is a million miles from the typical Italian restaurant experience you can otherwise find on the high-street.

But what really sets them apart is the pizza itself. Authentic Neapolitan-style pizza made with sourdough bases that have been fermented for 20 hours, then topped with artisan ingredients and stonebaked in a hand-built, wood fired oven. These pizzas are awesome and taste so good! So good we couldn’t resist eating half of them before taking the pictures!

The beauty of the pizzas are their simplicity. Back to basics to show us how pizza should be – you won’t find a pineapple anywhere near this menu. And only nine to choose from, with prices ranging from a modest £6 for a Queen Margherita, up to £11 if black truffle is your thing. On the day we enjoyed the pizza of the month – the pepper pig – with Italian sausage, wild broccoli, smoked mozzarella alongside a Montano sidro (that’s Italian for cider). This was followed by Italian desserts - Dolci – beautifully presented chocolate semi-freddo and orange cheesecake that tasted as good as they looked. And to complete the experience, coffee the Italian way – an espresso to fire us up, after we had pigged out on all the great food.

So has PETER managed to repair the reputation of the pizzeria? We’d say it’s gone further and redefined the whole experience of going out for pizza.
