Alley Cats traces a group of streetwise strays living on the fringes of society as they scramble for food, connection, and meaning, using their feline perspectives to dissect loneliness, friendship, and the everyday absurdities of human—and animal—life.

Back in April 2026, Gervais teased the project by posting a photo from the cast’s group recording sessions featuring the entire star-studded crew.
In Their Own Words: Gervais on Alley Cats
Gervais, who voices one of the lead strays, didn’t hold back when describing his animated counterpart:
“I play a fat, lazy, rude, opinionated creature with fangs, who’s not as smart or brave as he thinks he is. So quite a stretch.”
The concept itself was born out of pandemic necessity:
“I came up with the idea for Alley Cats during lockdown. I thought covid couldn’t stop me recording audio and designing characters. That’s how fucking long these things take!”
Rather than using standard animation voice-over techniques where actors record lines individually in isolation, Gervais insisted on getting the cast together in the same room to spark chaotic improvised magic:
“I wanted this to be different,” Gervais explained. “I said, ‘Everyone’s got to be in the room at the same time, we do each episode together, we do way too much, we go off piste whenever we can.’… The first episode, we did one hour and 40 minutes. If you can’t get a fantastic 15 minutes out of that with some of the best comedy minds in the country, then something’s gone wrong.”
The Latest Chapter in the Netflix Mega-Deal
Alley Cats marks the latest output from Gervais’ expansive overall deal with Netflix, which has previously delivered hit titles including After Life, Special Correspondents, and the animated feature The Willoughbys.
When reflecting on signing his massive Netflix partnership, Gervais famously quipped:
“I was planning to retire soon and just wander around the house drunk until I die, but I’ve grown a bit tired”
