Caitríona Balfe and Alfonso Cuarón Team Up for Chilling Cult Thriller Ascension
Apple TV is expanding its lineup of prestige drama with Ascension, a new one-hour psychological horror series backed by heavy-hitting award winners. Multi-Academy Award winner Alfonso Cuarón (Roma, Gravity, Disclaimer) is executive producing under his overall deal with Apple TV via Esperanto Filmoj, with BAFTA TV Award winner and Golden Globe nominee Caitríona Balfe set to star and executive produce.
A Twisted Deep-Dive Into the Church of Ascension
Adapted from Adam Nevill’s novel Last Days, Ascension follows Rose (Balfe), a relentless documentary filmmaker and newly divorced mother. Blessed with a knack for uncovering other people’s deepest truths, Rose remains plagued by unresolved conflicts in her own life.
When her latest documentary focuses on the Church of Ascension—a mysterious 20th-century religious cult—she initially finds unexpected solace in its doctrines. However, as her investigation deepens, she unravels a far more insidious threat lurking beneath the surface. The story examines the boundaries of evil, innocence, and the extreme sacrifices parents make to protect those they love, even when the ultimate danger comes from within.
Behind the Camera
Filmmaker Natalie Erika James (Relic, Apartment 7A) will serve as lead director and co-showrunner alongside Christian White. The duo co-wrote the scripts in tandem with Alfonso Cuarón and Carlos Cuarón.

Strengthening Apple TV’s Creative Roster
Ascension marks the latest collaboration between Cuarón, Anonymous Content, and Apple TV following their acclaimed limited series Disclaimer, which earned major nominations for stars Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline.
It also represents another key project for Balfe with Apple TV, as she is set to appear in the streamer’s original film Tenzing. Anonymous Content continues to deepen its footprint at Apple, with upcoming projects including the highly anticipated adaptation of Neuromancer and the series 12 12 12.
