Charlie Hunnam, Dan Stevens and more announed for BBC's A Legacy of Spies
The BBC has confirmed that production is underway on Legacy of Spies, a major new drama from The Ink Factory that marks the long-awaited return of George Smiley to television. The series draws primarily from John le Carré’s The Spy Who Came in from the Cold while also incorporating elements from his later novel A Legacy of Spies. This eight-episode espionage thriller is written and overseen by Stephen Cornwell and Clarisa Ingram, with Michael Lennox acting as executive producer and lead director. It is set to debut on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK, and on MGM+ in the United States.
Matthew Macfadyen, a two-time Emmy and BAFTA winner, takes on the role of George Smiley. He is joined by Charlie Hunnam as Alec Leamas, the unconventional field agent central to the story, and Daniel Brühl as Josef Fiedler, a precise and calculating Stasi strategist. Devrim Lingnau Islamoğlu portrays Doris Quinz, a young East German woman who becomes a crucial source of intelligence from within the regime.
Additional cast members include Agnes O’Casey as Liz Gold, reprising her role from the recent West End stage adaptation. Felix Kammerer appears as Hans-Dieter Mundt, a volatile and dangerous Stasi enforcer. The wider ensemble features Dan Stevens as the enigmatic insider Bill Haydon, Jake Dunn as Peter Guillam, Safia Oakley-Green as intelligence officer Molly Gibson, and Ariyon Bakare as seasoned American agent Cy Aflon. Representing the East German side are Saskia Rosendahl as Lotte Gamp, Patrick Güldenberg as Dr Karl Riemeck, and Volker Bruch as senior Stasi official Emmanuel Rapp.
Originally published in 1963, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold quickly became a global success, topping bestseller lists for months and reshaping the spy genre with its focus on realism, moral ambiguity, and the human cost of espionage. The newer adaptation aims to bring that same tone to modern audiences while expanding the narrative through material from A Legacy of Spies, offering a broader look at life behind the Iron Curtain.
The production is a collaboration between The Ink Factory and Amusement Park Film, in association with 127 Wall Productions and Paramount Television Studios. It will premiere in the UK on BBC platforms and in the US on MGM+.
The story follows Alec Leamas, a veteran intelligence operative, as he recruits Doris Quinz to smuggle sensitive Stasi documents to the West. Their mission triggers a tense chain of events in Cold War Berlin, drawing the attention of rival Stasi officers Josef Fiedler and Hans-Dieter Mundt. As the operation unfolds, Liz Gold becomes entangled in the mission, forcing Leamas to confront shifting loyalties and the personal cost of his work. Behind the scenes, George Smiley carefully directs operations while the shadowy Soviet figure Karla exerts influence from afar. As tensions rise, personal relationships become entangled with professional duty, and emotions themselves turn into tools within a relentless intelligence battle.
