Doctor Who faces the axe amidst falling ratings
The BBC are said to be considering "resting" the show.
Doctor Who could be axed later this year, as ratings continue to decline despite millions being pumped into the show.
According to The Sun a decision on the sci-fi show’s future will be made after Ncuti Gatwa’s second season airs. The newspaper says staff are at risk of being laid off and Disney could pull the plug on a £100 million deal as fans continue to desert the show.
They say it’s “woke” storylines that have seen loyal fans turn their back on the show which once pulled in millions of viewers every week.
A source says: “Ncuti doesn’t want to be tied to the series beyond this and plans to relocate to Los Angeles with several Hollywood projects standing by for him.
"His team also see a lot of fan backlash from the series, and don’t want the perception of him still being The Doctor to get in the way of any future work”.
“The show has been poorly managed in recent years and there’s a lot of people who’ve been working on this show for years and now being cast aside due to poor leadership.
“People warned some episodes were getting too caught up on an agenda rather than telling a story and those people got shouted down, ignored.”
Around 2 - 3 million people are now watching each episode on the BBC, whereas more than 10 million watched back in the day, when Christopher Eccleston was in the lead role.
Recent storylines have seen showrunner Russell T Davies suggest the Doctor is gay, rewrite the “rules” of the show to have two Doctors exist at once and introduce a Drag Queen villain.
The Sun claims the show may be rested and brought back in a few years time, or Ncuti could be replaced with a more well-known actor and bankable star.
