Gregg Wallace to be replaced on Masterchef pending BBC investigation
Gregg Wallace Steps Down from MasterChef amid historical misconduct Investigation
Gregg Wallace is temporarily stepping back from his role as co-presenter of MasterChef as historical allegations of misconduct are reviewed, according to the show’s production company, Banijay UK.
The move follows a BBC News inquiry that detailed claims from 13 individuals who accused Wallace of making inappropriate sexual comments during his 17-year career across various TV programs.
Former Celebrity MasterChef contestant Kirsty Wark, known for hosting BBC Newsnight, stated that Wallace made "sexualised" jokes during filming in 2011, which made others uncomfortable. Wallace’s lawyers have denied the allegations, stating he does not engage in sexually harassing behavior.
Allegations and Investigations
Claims include Wallace discussing his sex life publicly, removing his shirt in front of a female colleague while joking about a "fashion show," and making inappropriate remarks to a junior female employee about not wearing boxer shorts.
The BBC reportedly issued a warning to Wallace following a 2018 complaint, yet further incidents have since been alleged. BBC News began its investigation in the summer, uncovering claims spanning five programs between 2005 and 2022.
In response, Banijay UK has initiated an independent external review. The company stated that while the allegations had not been directly reported to its producers, it deemed it necessary to act. Wallace has pledged full cooperation with the investigation.
Banijay UK and BBC Statements
Banijay UK emphasized its commitment to staff welfare, outlining clear behavioral expectations and providing anonymous reporting channels. They encouraged anyone with concerns to come forward.
A BBC spokesperson affirmed that complaints are taken seriously and addressed rigorously. While Wallace is employed through external production companies, the BBC supports investigations into such matters.
Wallace’s Career
Wallace, 60, has co-hosted MasterChef with John Torode since 2005, alongside spin-offs such as Celebrity MasterChef and MasterChef: The Professionals. He also presented Saturday Kitchen, Eat Well For Less, and Inside The Factory.
Episodes of MasterChef: The Professionals already filmed with Wallace will air as planned.
In 2022, Wallace was recognized in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to food and charity.
