Little House on the Prarie trailer released by Netflix
Netflix has today released the first look at Little House on the Prairie, unveiling a full trailer ahead of the series’ debut on July 9. The new show brings a fresh take on a beloved classic, reimagining the iconic frontier story for modern audiences with a blend of family drama, survival storytelling, and a deeper exploration of life in the American West.
Based on the hugely popular books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, the series revisits a story that has captivated readers and viewers for generations—this time with a new cast, a broader perspective, and a more cinematic approach to frontier life.
What Is Little House on the Prairie About?
If you somehow missed its long-running TV presence, Little House on the Prairie centres on the Ingalls family as they navigate life on the American frontier in the 1800s. Inspired by Wilder’s own childhood, the books—first published in the 1930s—offer a semi-autobiographical look at the challenges and triumphs of growing up in a rapidly changing landscape.
This new adaptation expands on that foundation. It’s described as part family drama, part survival story, and part origin tale of the American West—exploring not only the Ingalls family’s journey, but also the wider communities and cultures that shaped frontier life.
Who Stars in the Netflix Series?
Leading the cast is Alice Halsey (Lessons in Chemistry), who plays Laura Ingalls—the curious and outspoken young heroine at the heart of the story.
Her father, Charles Ingalls, is portrayed by Luke Bracey (Elvis, Hacksaw Ridge, Little Fires Everywhere), bringing charisma and optimism to the role of a farmer, craftsman, and storyteller always seeking a better future for his family.
Crosby Fitzgerald (Crime 101, Palm Royale) stars as Caroline Ingalls, the family’s strong and practical backbone, balancing love and resilience amid the realities of frontier life.
The supporting cast adds depth to the wider community, including Jocko Sims as Dr. George Tann, Warren Christie as Civil War veteran John Edwards, Meegwun Fairbrother as farmer Mitchell, and Alyssa Wapanatǎhk as White Sun. Younger characters are played by Wren Zhawenim Gotts, Xander Cole, and others, with additional appearances from Ryan Robbins, Barrett Doss, Mary Holland, Michael Hough, Kowen Cadorath, Thosh Collins, Maclean Fish, and Rebecca Amzallag.
A Modern Reimagining of a Classic
The series is written by Rebecca Sonnenshine (The Boys, The Vampire Diaries, Archive 81), who brings both genre experience and a personal connection as a longtime fan of Wilder’s work. Rather than simply retelling the original stories, the show aims to reinterpret them with a broader, more inclusive lens while preserving the emotional core that made them so enduring.
Why the Story Still Matters
Since their original release, the Little House books have sold more than 73 million copies worldwide, reaching readers in over 100 countries. Their legacy was cemented by the classic 1970s TV adaptation, which ran for nearly a decade and remains a nostalgic favourite even today.
Netflix’s new version is designed to introduce the story to a new generation while honouring that legacy—blending familiar elements with a fresh perspective.
When and Where to Watch
Little House on the Prairie premieres July 9, streaming exclusively on Netflix, with a second season already confirmed.
