Manic Street Preachers will join Jo Whiley to co-host her Radio 2 evening show this Wednesday from 7.30pm, in celebration of their new album, ‘Critical Thinking’.
The band first gained attention with their 1992 debut album Generation Terrorists, an ambitious and politically charged record that set the tone for their career. This was followed by Gold Against the Soul (1993) and the critically acclaimed The Holy Bible (1994), the latter of which showcased a darker, more intense style. However, tragedy struck in 1995 when guitarist and lyricist Richey Edwards mysteriously disappeared. Despite this devastating loss, the remaining members decided to continue.
Their 1996 album Everything Must Go marked a new era for the band, featuring a more expansive sound and commercial success, with hits like A Design for Life. This album won multiple awards and solidified their status as one of Britain’s leading rock acts.
The Manics continued their success with This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours (1998), which included the number-one single If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next. Over the years, they have released numerous albums, including Know Your Enemy (2001), Lifeblood (2004), and Send Away the Tigers (2007), each showcasing their ability to evolve while maintaining their signature sound.
The band’s later work, including Resistance Is Futile (2018) and The Ultra Vivid Lament (2021), reflects their continued relevance and ability to adapt to the changing music landscape. With a career spanning over three decades, Manic Street Preachers remain a vital force in British rock, known for their passionate lyrics, thought-provoking themes, and anthemic sound.
