Netflix’s Little House on the Prairie reboot: Release date, Cast, Plot and everything we know so far
Netflix is bringing a fresh take on a beloved classic, with Little House on the Prairie set to debut on July 9. The new series reimagines the iconic frontier story for a modern audience, blending family drama with survival storytelling and a deeper exploration of life in the American West.
Based on the hugely popular books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, the show revisits a story that has captivated readers and viewers for generations—this time with a new cast, a broader perspective, and a cinematic approach to frontier life.
What Is Little House on the Prairie About?
You mean you don't remember it on tv every Sunday? Well if you don't know, at its core, Little House on the Prairie tells the story of the Ingalls family as they navigate life on the American frontier in the 1800s. Inspired by Wilder’s own childhood, the books—first published in the 1930s—offer a semi-autobiographical look at the challenges and triumphs of growing up in a rapidly changing landscape.
Netflix’s adaptation expands on that foundation. The series is described as part family drama, part survival story, and part origin tale of the American West. It aims to explore not only the Ingalls family’s journey, but also the wider community and cultures that shaped life on the frontier.
This new version promises a more layered and expansive narrative, reflecting both the hardships and the human connections that defined the era.
Who Stars in the Netflix Series?
Leading the cast is Alice Halsey (Lessons in Chemistry), who takes on the role of Laura Ingalls—the curious, outspoken young heroine at the centre of the story.
Her father, Charles Ingalls, is played by Luke Bracey (Elvis, Hacksaw Ridge, Little Fires Everywhere). Charles is portrayed as a charismatic and optimistic figure—a skilled farmer, craftsman and storyteller, always searching for new opportunities for his family.
Crosby Fitzgerald (Crime 101, Palm Royale) plays Caroline Ingalls, Laura’s mother. Strong, practical and quietly determined, Caroline is the backbone of the family, balancing her love for her husband with the realities of frontier life.
The supporting cast brings a wide range of characters to life, helping to build a rich and diverse community:
Jocko Sims as Dr. George Tann, a kind and well-connected physician
Warren Christie as John Edwards, a Civil War veteran with a mysterious edge
Meegwun Fairbrother as Mitchell, a successful farmer and family man
Alyssa Wapanatǎhk as White Sun, whose sharp wit and perspective shape her family’s story
Wren Zhawenim Gotts as Good Eagle, a gifted young storyteller
Xander Cole as Little Puma, searching for his place in the world
Additional cast members include Ryan Robbins, Barrett Doss, Mary Holland, Michael Hough, Kowen Cadorath, Thosh Collins, Maclean Fish and Rebecca Amzallag, each contributing to the evolving frontier community.
A Modern Reimagining of a Classic
The new adaptation is written by Rebecca Sonnenshine (The Boys, The Vampire Diaries, Archive 81), who brings both genre experience and a personal connection to the material as a longtime fan of Wilder’s work.
“I’m incredibly grateful to our wonderful cast and crew, who put their hearts and hard work into making our first season come alive,” Sonnenshine said in a statement. “We can’t wait to share this new adaptation of the Little House books with the world, and we’re thrilled that Netflix is giving us the opportunity to continue the story.”
Rather than simply retelling the original stories, the Netflix series aims to reinterpret them—offering a broader, more inclusive view of frontier life while maintaining the emotional core that made the books so enduring.
Why Little House on the Prairie Still Matters
Since their original release, the Little House books have sold more than 73 million copies worldwide, spanning over 100 countries and multiple languages. The story’s enduring popularity was further cemented by the classic 1970s TV adaptation, which ran for nearly a decade and remains a nostalgic favourite.
Even today, the original series continues to find new audiences, with billions of minutes streamed in recent years—proof of its lasting appeal.
Netflix’s version is designed to introduce the story to a new generation while honouring its legacy, combining familiar elements with a fresh perspective.
