The newly released teaser offers a glimpse of everyday policing in Blackthorn as rookie officer Shane Bradley (Frank Blake) pulls over an elderly motorist, David (Trevor Gill), and his passenger Imelda (Rosamund Monteith). The seemingly routine traffic stop is revealed to be part of an effort to improve local crime statistics, hinting that the series will continue balancing humour, community policing and the moral grey areas that have become the show’s trademark.
Returning to the frontline are Siân Brooke as Grace, Martin McCann as Stevie, Katherine Devlin as Annie, Nathan Braniff as Tommy and Frank Blake as Shane, with the core team facing a fresh set of personal and professional challenges.
Fans will also be pleased to see the return of Richard Dormer as Gerry Cliff. Dormer, who is also known for his roles in Game of Thrones, The Day of the Jackal and Fortitude, last appeared in the show’s first series. His return is expected to shed new light on unresolved events from the past.
Also back are Hannah McClean as solicitor Jen Robinson and Jonathan Harden as disgraced former inspector Jonty, while the supporting cast includes Joanne Crawford as Helen McNally, Andi Osho as Sandra, Abigail McGibbon as Tina, Dearbháile McKinney as Aisling, Neil Keery as McCloskey and Andrea Irvine as Nicola.
The new series also welcomes back Cathy Tyson as exclusive club owner Dana Morgan and Michael Smiley as intelligence officer Paul “Colly” Collins, two characters who have become increasingly central to the show’s criminal underworld.
Created by Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson, alongside Stephen Wright, Blue Lights has become one of the BBC’s biggest drama successes since launching in 2023. Praised for its grounded portrayal of policing in post-conflict Belfast, the series has won both BAFTA and Royal Television Society awards while attracting audiences around the world.
Series four will once again consist of six hour-long episodes. Brendan Mullin (In Flight, Wreck) serves as producer, while Angela Griffin directs the opening three episodes before Sam O’Mahony takes over for the second half of the season.
Produced by Two Cities Television in association with Gallagher Films, the drama has now been sold to more than 160 international territories, cementing its reputation as one of the BBC’s most successful recent crime exports.
Blue Lights series 4 will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer this autumn. The BBC has yet to announce a confirmed premiere date, but the newly released teaser suggests the officers of Blackthorn are about to face another unpredictable chapter.
