HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series has executed a major Season 2 recasting. Game of Thrones star Kit Harington has officially stepped into the role of Defense Against the Dark Arts professor Gilderoy Lockhart, stepping in after Nicholas Hoult was forced to exit the project due to scheduling conflicts.
According to a report by Deadline, Hoult’s departure came after production scheduling shifts for the second season—which adapts Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets—conflicted with his pre-existing feature film commitments.
Why Nicholas Hoult Exited the Wizarding World
Hoult was initially cast as the vanity-obsessed celebrity wizard earlier in August. However, as filming schedules evolved, the logjam made it impossible for him to fulfill the commitment alongside his other Hollywood projects, leading to an amicable parting of ways.

Harington’s casting marks a high-profile return to HBO, the network where he spent eight seasons portraying Jon Snow in Game of Thrones.
While this marks his first live-action appearance in the Wizarding World, Harington is already familiar with the character of Gilderoy Lockhart. He previously voiced the self-enamored professor in Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions.
“I read [Harry Potter], and like so many generations, I was entranced, and then I was a huge fan all through my teenage years.”

The recasting ensures that production for Season 2 remains on track as HBO continues building out its decade-long adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s original book series.
The series debuts Christmas Day on HBO Max, available through Sky TV and NOW in the UK.
