Netflix has officially brought the world of Manifest back to life with a brand-new spin-off series, Arrivals: A New Manifest Mystery.
The surprise announcement was made on Friday, August 28, in a deliberate nod to the mysterious Flight 828 at the centre of the original series.
The new Netflix series will introduce an entirely new cast and storyline while remaining set within the Manifest universe.
For fans who thought the story ended with the conclusion of Manifest in 2023, the announcement marks a major return for one of Netflix’s most successful supernatural dramas.
What is Arrivals: A New Manifest Mystery about?
Netflix has confirmed that Arrivals will follow the aftermath of a mysterious plane crash in Denver.
The passengers survive the crash but have no idea who they are, where they came from or why they were on the aircraft.
A young social worker and a Homeland Security agent become involved in helping the survivors, only to discover that the mystery surrounding them could be connected to a much bigger threat.
The new series therefore retains the mystery-box approach that helped make Manifest a global streaming hit, while moving the story away from the original Flight 828 passengers.
Manifest creator Jeff Rake returns
One of the biggest pieces of news for existing fans is that Manifest creator Jeff Rake is returning for Arrivals.
Rake will work alongside Margaret Easley and Laura Putney, who previously worked on Manifest and will serve as co-creators and co-showrunners on the new series.
That means Netflix is not simply reviving the name of Manifest.
The creative team responsible for the original mystery is returning to expand the universe.
Speaking to Netflix’s Tudum, Rake said: “I’m delighted to be able to tell a new story for the Manifest fans out there and also for a brand-new audience.”
He also acknowledged that a new generation of viewers could discover the original series through the spin-off.
Rake told Tudum that the creative team has attempted to make Arrivals rewarding for existing Manifest fans while also making it accessible to people who have never watched the original show.
Manifest became a global Netflix hit
The decision to expand Manifest is hardly surprising given the show’s performance after moving to Netflix.
According to Netflix, the four seasons of the original series have generated more than 130 million views since early 2023.
Season four also spent nine weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10 English TV list and reached No. 1 in more than 90 countries.
That international performance gives Arrivals a significant advantage before production has even begun.
Rather than attempting to launch a completely new science-fiction property, Netflix is returning to an established world with a substantial global audience.
Will the original Manifest cast return?
At present, Netflix has announced Arrivals as a new story featuring a new cast of characters.
There has been no confirmation that Josh Dallas, Melissa Roxburgh or the other original Manifest stars will return in the new series.
That does not necessarily rule out connections to the original characters, however, particularly given that the series has been explicitly described as being set in the Manifest universe.
For now, Netflix is keeping the focus on the new mystery.
Why Netflix chose August 28 for the announcement
The timing of the announcement is particularly deliberate.
August 28 is effectively Manifest Day for fans because of Flight 828.
Netflix previously used the same date to announce the revival of Manifest after NBC cancelled the series.
Five years later, the streaming service has once again used August 28 to expand the franchise.
It is a clever piece of marketing that immediately signals to existing fans that this is connected to the story they already know.
When will Arrivals be released on Netflix?
Netflix has not yet announced a release date for Arrivals: A New Manifest Mystery.
The streamer has also yet to reveal the full cast or announce when filming will begin.
For now, fans can revisit all four seasons of Manifest on Netflix while waiting for more information about the spin-off.
With the original series having already demonstrated its ability to attract audiences around the world, Arrivals could become one of Netflix’s most closely watched new drama projects.
And for Manifest fans, the mystery is officially taking flight again.
