Former ‘Race Across the World’ Contestant Jo Gardiner Dies Aged 61
Former Race Across the World contestant Jo Gardiner has passed away at the age of 61 following a health battle, just a year after her son and on-screen racing partner, Sam, tragically died in a car accident.
Gardiner died “following a long and courageous battle with cancer”, her family confirmed in a statement. She is survived by her son Charlie.
A Memorable Journey Across South America
A professional physiotherapist from Manchester, Gardiner captured the hearts of television audiences in 2020 during the second series of the hit BBC reality show. She entered the competition alongside her son Sam, aiming to share an epic travel adventure with him as he navigated life with ADHD.
Together, the mother-and-son duo competed against four other pairs in an intense, budget-led race spanning thousands of miles from Mexico City down to the southernmost tip of South America in Ushuaia, Argentina.
Tragedy struck the family in June 2025 when Sam died after his car came off the road and crashed.

Paying tribute to her life and vibrant personality, Gardiner’s family released a heartfelt statement honoring her memory:
“she had a rare gift for making everyone around her feel more alive”
“She lived fully, fiercely and never did anything by halves”
“She was blessed with countless friends, drawn to her extraordinary magnetism.”
“Somehow, each one felt as though they were among her very best.”
“To us, she was more than all of these things.”
“She was our family, our joy, our safe place and our absolute treasure.”
“We know how deeply Jo was loved, and we take comfort in knowing that her laughter, her courage, her kindness and her wonderfully outrageous spirit will live on in the many people whose lives she touched.”
While asking for privacy during this difficult period, her relatives described her as “one of a kind”, adding that “There will never be another her.”
They encouraged “everyone who knew and loved Jo to do exactly what she would have wanted: tell the funny stories, raise a glass, have an adventure, laugh loudly and live life to the full”.
