‘Ghost Market’ Officially Unveiled with First Footage at D23
Pixar Animation Studios pulled back the curtain on its next big theatrical gamble at the D23 Disney Entertainment Showcase, officially announcing Ghost Market. Directed and written by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Trevor Jimenez (Weekends, story supervisor on Soul), the original film will serve as Pixar’s very first foray into full-fledged supernatural storytelling.
Originally developed under the working title Ono Ghost Market, the project has been retooled from its early roots into a feature-length cinematic release. The film is officially slated to haunt theaters nationwide on March 10, 2028.
The Story: Hungry Ghosts in Hawaii
Inspired by rich Asian folklore and traditions surrounding supernatural bazaars, Ghost Market follows a teenage boy and aspiring content creator named Kyle, who moves with his family to Hawaii.
While exploring his new island surroundings, the young ghost hunter stumbles upon a hidden crossroads linking the realm of the living with the world of the dead. At the center of this secret portal lies a bustling, hidden marketplace populated by spirits, spooks, and “hungry ghosts”—a place where humans and deceased souls coexist and trade in secret.
First Footage Debuts in Anaheim
Attendees inside the Honda Center were treated to an exclusive first-look clip introduced on stage.
The teaser footage opens with Kyle navigating an eerie, seemingly deserted night market in Hawaii with his camera in hand. As he speaks to his online audience, the camera captures a bowl of steaming noodles rising into mid-air on its own. The teenager freaks out as unseen spirits begin interacting with the food stalls around him, blending Pixar’s signature visual humor with genuine supernatural intrigue.
Pixar’s Original Swing for 2028
The announcement marks a key milestone for Pixar as it celebrates its 40th anniversary era. Releasing between blockbuster franchise sequels like Toy Story 5 and Incredibles 3, Ghost Market represents a major commitment to original storytelling on the big screen.
With stunning visuals, a unique island setting, and a fresh take on folklore, Ghost Market promises to be one of the studio’s most distinct theatrical offerings when it arrives in Spring 2028.
