Review: & Juliet at Curve Leicester is so good, it should be on prescription ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

Catch it at Curve Leicester.

There are feel-good musicals and then there is & Juliet. A show so uplifting, it should be on prescription. We love a good theatre show but once in a while something comes along that is a cut above the rest, and this is one of them.

The magic is partly down to an exceptional cast. Jay McGuinness of The Wanted fame is sensational as Shakespeare. This lad has quickly become one of the ones to watch in musical theatre and deserves a multiple of awards for it.

And Gerardine Sacdalan as Juliet is one of the best performers we have seen in years. She brings a very welcome, contemporary performance to this modern musical. She looks like a popstar, sings like a popstar, dances like a popstar and acts like an actress. Gerardine is simply incredible.

We also loved Lee Latchford-Evans, who is absolutely hilarious and so brilliant as Lance.

As for the supporting cast, every one of them looked like they’re having a blast, and my word are they professional. There’s a reason why many of them appeared in the recent movie smash, Wicked.

& Juliet is a jukebox musical that reimagines Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet with a feminist twist. Instead of Juliet tragically dying, the story explores what would happen if she chose to live and forge her own destiny. The musical is framed as a battle of storytelling between Shakespeare and his wife, Anne Hathaway, who challenges him to rewrite Juliet’s fate.

From the brains behind ‘Schitts Creek’, & Juliet is littered with modern pop songs all created by the infamous Max Martin. That means it’s stuffed with hits from Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Adam Lambert, and N’Sync. All of which are performed brilliantly both by the orchestra and the cast.

It’s bright, bold, fantastically written and it will blow your cobwebs away. Get to Leicester (just an hour away from London) and see it whilst its there until Saturday.
