Here’s what she had to say…
Debbie Webster, played by Sue Devaney in Coronation Street, is a sharp, business-savvy and fiercely loyal character who has become central to the show in recent years. Originally introduced in the 1980s as Kevin Webster’s younger sister, Debbie returned full-time in 2020 with a more glamorous, assertive persona, often involving herself in business ventures and family affairs. Despite her confident exterior, she is deeply protective of her loved ones, and this loyalty has repeatedly led her into difficult and morally complex situations.
Her current storylines are among the soap’s most emotional, centring on her diagnosis with young-onset vascular dementia and the impact it has on her independence and relationships. At the same time, Debbie is dealing with the fallout from taking the blame for a fatal car crash to protect her brother, which led to her imprisonment and ongoing tension within the family. Compounding this is the revelation that she is secretly the biological mother of Carl, a long-buried truth that adds further strain as her condition worsens. Together, these arcs show Debbie struggling to maintain control of her life while facing illness, guilt and fractured family ties.
Watch Coronation Street weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1 or on demand via ITVX.
