Following the massive climax of No Way Home, where Doctor Strange’s spell erased Peter Parker’s identity from the world’s memory, this installment finds Tom Holland’s hero stripped back to basics—navigating street-level heroism, financial struggles, and the lingering emotional fallout of losing his inner circle.
Several outlets praised the film for grounding the web-slinger’s emotional arc. Empire noted that while pacing slips in the second act, director Destin Daniel Cretton keeps the narrative rooted in character:
“If the back half of the film feels a little sluggish, Cretton — who made his name with intimate dramas about young people like Short Term 12 — never fully loses focus of the guy behind the mask”.
The Independent was similarly upbeat, crediting both the new directorial vision and the returning writing team for refreshing the franchise tone:
“Brand New Day offers a maturation not only of its hero, but of the franchise’s entire vision, too. While returning screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers provide a sense of continuity in the character, its director Destin Daniel Cretton (of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings fame) and his frequent cinematographer Brett Pawlak have simultaneously allowed the series to feel completely revitalised”.
